Crying or unsettled behaviour is normal in young infants. A baby at 6-weeks of age will on average cry 2-3 hours in a 24-hour period. This unsettled behaviour can be very difficult for parents. At times it can be even more prolonged, with excessive crying being > 3 hours per day for > 3-days per week. While being unsettled can be within the spectrum of normal behaviour for young babies, there are other causes of such behaviour, particularly if very significant or associated with poor weight gain, which may require consideration and for which a medical assessment is recommended.
