Asthma is very common, affecting up to 1 in 6 children in Australia. Asthma results in difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath and wheezing. These symptoms often go unrecognised but are easily treated. Other respiratory conditions are also very common in childhood and include recurrent chest infections, chronic cough and problems breathing during sleep. Respiratory conditions are the commonest reason for consultations with paediatricians, attending emergency departments and for admission to hospital in children.
