Symptoms which raise the possibility of an ASD include:
- delayed or unusual use of language
- difficulties reading other people instinctively
- a narrow range of interests
- obsessionality
- a strong preference for routines and rituals
- marked inflexibility
- intense emotional reactions (‘meltdowns”) and/or high anxiety levels
- unusual sensory behaviours
A range of causes for these behaviours needs to be considered and initial assessment by a developmental paediatrician is a recommended for this purpose.
